Choosing your character can be a bit misleading at the beginning of the game. I selected to be a large cave troll and expected to make use of my brute strength to battle limitless orcs. My assumption about this game was wrong two times I noticed that everything was text-based.
Imperian has got to be the most unique "video game" I have ever played. Fundamentally it is more like an interactive book than a traditional video game with graphics and visuals. This is because the whole game is played out by text boxes. Normally in RPG games, text boxes are used when a character is speaking. In Imperian however, everything is controlled by text and it is up to your imagination and quick mind to navigate your way through the game.
For someone who is remotely interested in video games, I am mournful to say that Imperian is not the game you'll have an interest in. Reading the text can get boring and tedious sometimes and it can be hard for most video game enthusiasts to actually get excited as there is not any actual gameplay involved. Imperian can be described as a soccer management game only that you are giving out commands on a fantasy battlefield in lieu of the soccer field.
The game starts instantly as the text reads that you are trapped in a maze and have nowhere to go. That is until your tutorial guide named Mathyus helps you become familiar through Imperian's unorthodox style of gameplay. The whole game is much based inside a maze and you need to type in commands to navigate your way. For example in case you need to go north, you just must type in "N" to go in that direction. The same thing holds true in case you need to go in any other direction .
It can be repetitive needing to type every command to do everything. In the event you need to wear clothing not only do you need to type "Buy Tunic" but you also must type in "Wear Tunic" as well. It is this level of tedious tasks that you need to do that makes this game slow paced and not fun to play. It is also annoying that when you need to speak to specific characters, you will must navigate you way through the maze plenty of times...
The only people I feel that will have fun with this "game" are people with immense imaginations and read plenty of novels. One time the story kicks in, there is a chance you will be immersed and the game can get much more thrilling. If you are a kind of gamer that likes taking a look at graphics and cut scenes, then Imperian is definitely not the game for you.
